The Soundtrack Collection (i) Release

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

Film as dream, film as music. No art passes our conscience in the way film does, and goes directly to our feelings, deep down into the dark rooms of our souls.

― Ingmar Bergman

It’s with great pleasure I can announce this album is going to be released across all digital platforms at the end of May, 2019.

This album has been carefully curated to provide a moody & emotional journey through some of my film scores over the last 15 years; focussing primarily on unreleased soundtracks. Exploring intimate string quartets, eclectic small ensembles, orchestras, solo piano, songs (featuring some incredible vocalists), creating a journey feel to the album which leads to a greater intensity as it progresses, including an Icelandic-inspired ambient-post-rock track.

I also contribute to some tracks on; piano, bass duduk, percussion and saxophone.

War Mothers – Unbreakable at Tribeca 2019

Very excited to hear that the recent short documentary film, which I composed the score to, has been officially selected to premiere at New York’s Tribeca Film Festival. Congratulations to director Steven Bugryn & producer Steven Zelko for their dedication, enthusiasm and creativity toward bringing this amazing story of an incredible young woman to the screen.

Producing new SHENKO album

Very excited to announce I am producing the new album for singer/songwriter, Nicole Shenko (SHENKO) and her partner and music engineer/mixer, Christian Scallan.

Nicole asked me to write a string arrangement for one of the songs on this album called Winter, as she loved the way I write for strings; of course flattery goes a long way and I was immediately interested! I had a listen to the song, which had only Nicole singing with piano and found the song interesting, but I needed to understand it more. So then Nicole gave me, what is now one of her famous ‘song-briefs’, which included an in-depth backstory of the song’s lyrics, visualisations of what will happen in the video clip (including what she will be wearing), and a broader philosophical discussion of what the song means and messages it carries. I wish every film brief could be like this! Now I knew what this song needed. So I asked if I could not only write the string arrangement, but also have a crack at producing the whole song. When I finished my rough demo version of the track I asked Nicole to come over so I could play it to her in person….I was very nervous about whether she would like it. When the track finished I looked at her and she had a huge smile on her face and said that she’s never had an experience like this to a song; simultaneous goosebumps, shivers and I believe, the sweats. After this successful result, I was given another track, and then another, and then another.

It’s an exciting collaboration between the three of us; we plan to record all the musicians in November and hopefully have the mixes complete before Xmas.

I think 2019 is going to be a great year!

THE BLAKE MYSTERIES – GHOST STORIES TELEMOVIE

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

‘It’s been almost three years since we last saw Jean and a hell of a lot has happened in that time. Jean and Blake were married for only 18 months when Blake went missing. Since then Jean has taken on her husband’s mantle as, a solver of mysteries. Murder, mayhem and Jean Blake are a potent mix and anything can and will happen.’

That’s the official blurb, meanwhile, I’ve started scoring the 88 minute feature length TV drama and there’s about 52 minutes of original score to write in 9 days. It’s exciting for me to revamp the soundtrack and the theme to reflect a new, yet very familiar, show; set in 1963 with Jean (Nadine Garner) and Alice (Belinda McClory) leading us down a windy path to solving more murder mysteries. The stars of my soundtrack are a little different this time, with new themes, and a larger, darker sounding string ensemble (featuring viola and cello), with a greater array of pulses and ambient electronics mixed into the classical setting.

Tranmission date to be announced via Channel 7 in Australia.

The Great Barrier Reef documentary

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

I’m commencing work on a new score for another Imax 3D documentary about The Great Barrier Reef.

Can ordinary people make a difference to the reef’s future?

Can a young photographer create awareness through her blogs?

There’s a true sense of wonderment in the people who experience the reef and a strong connection between them and the sea creatures they encounter; having swum with turtles in the reef before, I know what this feeling is like. Just have to tap into it in a musical sense!

I’m thinking there’ll be a complex variety of pulses and pads, some strings, percussion, an assortment of flutes from around the world and vocals.

More news to follow….
